Being in the Industry

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 5, 2014, 10:26 AM
There was a huge layoff at my gaming company back in March due to company reorg. At first, I was very sad about it, I didn't even know where to go. But the truth is, I wasn't very happy there. It took time to realize this.

The people were great to work with and there was good culture within my circle of friends (whether this be about ping pong or Monster Hunter) but the fact is- it's not a well oiled company.

During my time there, I was convinced it was good because of the name and IP I was able to work with. In the end, it was a vicious cycle of wanting to do more but ended up doing less.

The company is huge, with many hoops to go through for every little problem. While this is good for quality assurance, it was hindering production time and value. They had meetings beyond meetings about my work without me being in them to voice my opinion but instead, send me an email after their meeting about their thoughts on my work. It's simply not a refined process.

Within a few weeks after the layoff, I was able to start another job at a much more experienced company in terms of game design. They were not amateurs and they have been keeping up with the industry for over 10 years now. Here, I feel I am a part of a team and I can rely on them if I have any trouble. I can open up to the people that I work with and those above me to hear out my thoughts on any matter.

I thought things were going well for the past two months until yesterday. There was an impromptu meeting in the morning. If you've been in the industry as long as I have, you probably already know that game company + unplanned meetings = bad news. It's never good, never.

Turns out, the Director of my team (the one that hired me),.... is going to be moving on. He's going to another team and the news have left our team completely lost. We've all relied on his energy and optimism for a long time. Heck, it's why I chose to come into this company in the first place! he really inspired me. This reorg though, has hit me less than it would have if it were in the past.

I'm a slow learner, I suppose. At least I've finally gotten here.

In the end, you never know what the industry will bring. Every day is different, being able to adapt is the key to staying on the path of success.
